A stroll through the rice fields of Penestanan

The Walk in the Penestanan Rice Fields is one of those places that completely surprised us. With few available online information, other than the fact that there is a rice field walk in Penestanan, we decided to explore the path on our own. As we rode our scooter along the narrow road leading to the rice fields, we were amazed by the incredible views. The sun was just rising, and a cool breeze and warm golden light welcomed us to one of the quietest places we found in Ubud. Views of the rice fields, palm trees, and Mount Batur in the background are hard to beat—a perfect spot for a morning walk, in our opinion. Since we had a clear dawn, we struggled to put away our cameras as every few meters it seemed like the views were only getting better.

  • Qual è il momento migliore per una passeggiata nei Campi di Riso di Penestanan? As the Penestanan Rice Fields Walk is a bit outside the center of Ubud, you'll see far fewer people here, meaning that almost any time of day, you can enjoy serene views. However, we prefer visiting the rice fields during sunrise or sunset when the sunlight is softer, creating that perfect golden glow.
  • What is the length of the Penestanan Rice Fields Walk? The total length of the Penestanan Rice Fields Walk is 1.5 km. However, if you bring your means of transport, be aware that you'll need to park your scooter and walk the entire trail on foot since the Penestanan Rice Fields Walk is not a loop path.
  • How difficult is the Penestanan Rice Fields Walk? The Penestanan Rice Fields Walk is considered one of the easiest walks on this list. The path is mostly paved, a bit narrow, but quite flat, making it a rather easy route!

A stroll through the rice fields of Sari Organik

The Sari Organik Walk, named after one of the restaurants along the route, is one of those places that proves you don't have to go far to find beautiful rice fields in Ubud. Located behind the bustling streets of central Ubud, you'll find a trail that takes you along palm-lined roads, through rice fields, farms, restaurants, and art workshops. Many of the restaurants along this route offer a splendid view of the rice fields—a perfect place for breakfast at the end of your hike. However, many people end their walk at Sari Organik, which is a shame because the best part of the hike is yet to come. As the trail narrows, you'll encounter fewer people, shops, and restaurants along the way, and the view... only gets better.

Stroll through the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, the most beautiful rice fields in Ubud

A half-hour north of Ubud, you'll find Bali's most famous rice fields: the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. While we had seen hundreds of photos of these rice fields on Instagram, nothing compared to the beauty of these live terraces. The Tegalalang Rice Terraces are a labyrinth of rice paddies with paths and steps leading you up and down the most picturesque views. Combine these with lush palm trees and small rivers, and there you have it—a maze of rice fields where you could easily get lost for hours, discovering another breathtaking view at every turn. Along the road that runs alongside the rice terraces, you'll find a dozen cafes and restaurants with views of the fields—a perfect place to stop for some food after a bit of exploration.

A stroll through the rice fields of Tegalalang

  • What is the best time to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces? Like many of these rice fields, it's best to come early, especially with such a popular spot like the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but you'll also dodge the hot Balinese afternoons that can make navigating up and down the pathways quite sweaty. Personally, we love visiting the Tegalalang Rice Terraces for sunrise, as the soft light creates the most beautiful golden glow on the rice terraces.
  • How much time should I spend at the Tegalalang Rice Terraces? You can spend as little or as much time as you want at the Tegalalang Rice Terraces; it all depends on what you want to see. You can simply stop and admire the view from the restaurants, or you can spend an hour or two exploring the rice fields—it's entirely up to you! We would personally recommend spending at least an hour in the rice fields, if not more!
  • How difficult is the hike through the Tegalalang Rice Terraces? There isn't a predefined path through the rice fields; small and narrow trails will ascend and descend, branching off and leading you to different sections of the rice fields. The path can be a bit muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy season, so that's something you might want to keep in mind. However, aside from that, the trails are mostly well-maintained, and walking here is quite easy.

A walk along Campuhan Ridge

Near the center of Ubud, you'll find a beautiful path surrounded by the lushest greenery called Campuhan Ridge Walk. A trail situated atop a ridge that offers breathtaking views, a walk that quickly became one of our favorite things to do in Ubud. However, this walk is a bit different from the others we've mentioned in this list. You see, the Campuhan Ridge Walk doesn't actually traverse the rice fields; instead, it will take you to the rice fields, located at the end of the ±2 km walk. Once you reach the end of the path, you'll find it transforms into a small road lined with cafes and art workshops, but if you continue a bit further, towards Karsa Kafe, you'll see the view open up, rewarding you with the most beautiful sight of the rice fields.

Information about the Campuhan Ridge Walk

  • What is the best time to visit the Campuhan Ridge Walk? If you prefer to see the Campuhan Ridge Walk in its golden splendor, we highly recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset. If you're looking to escape the crowds, try visiting during sunrise; the walk is much less crowded during this time of day, though it will still be a rarity to have this walk all to yourself.
  • How long is the Campuhan Ridge Walk? It's an approximate 20-30 minute walk from the beginning of the trail to Karsa Kafe, where you'll find the rice fields. Keep in mind that this walk is not a circular route, so add an extra half-hour to your itinerary for the return!
  • How difficult is the Campuhan Ridge Walk? The Campuhan Ridge Walk is a rather easy and relaxing stroll, in our opinion. However, be aware that there are a couple of steps and uneven stones on the path, so the use of a bicycle or stroller is not recommended.
